Princeton Police Increases Patrol, Synagogue Threat Suspect Caught

A warning from the FBI about a "broad threat" to New Jersey synagogues has prompted extra patrol in Princeton, police said.

PRINCETON, NJ — The Princeton Police Department has increased patrols in the Municipality in response to an FBI warning of a “broad threat” to synagogues in New Jersey, Princeton police said.

"We have been in touch with synagogues and encouraged everyone to call us if they see anything they deem suspicious," Princeton police spokesperson told Patch.

The FBI said Friday that the threat had ended after a suspect was captured. However, national groups have said that antisemitic incidents are on the rise in America.

The FBI issued the warning Thursday afternoon saying it had "received credible information of a broad threat to synagogues in NJ." "We ask at this time that you take all security precautions to protect your community and facility," the FBI said.

Gov. Phil Murphy issued a statement Friday, thanking the FBI and local law enforcement agencies for their efforts in "mitigating" the threat to synagogues.

"This threat violated one of the most fundamental tenets of our nation — the right to worship according to the dictates of our conscience and our sacred and holy traditions," Murphy said. "We will always endeavor to ensure that every New Jerseyan of every faith may continue to live, study and worship without fear for their safety."
