PRINCETON JUNCTION, NJ – Just two days before hopping on an eight-hour flight to kick off a vacation, Luke Perkins’ back went out. The pain was debilitating, he said, to the point where he’d never be able to sit on a plane for a long period of time. He needed help, and he needed it quickly.

Enter Marc Rubenstein, DPT, co-founder and physical therapist at Jersey Physical Therapy.

“I thought I was going to be paralyzed for life, the pain was so bad. I didn’t think I would ever get better,” said Perkins, a project manager in engineering at Schlumberger-Princeton Technology Center in Princeton Junction. “But Marc said not to worry … that this thing is a common occurrence. My disc was bulging out of place, and it was pinching some nerves.”

Rubenstein applied mobilization to the soft tissue and the joints in Perkins’ lower back. He showed Perkins some exercises to do during his trip and gave him a book, “Treat Your Own Back” by Robin McKenzie, to help him understand and overcome the pain he was experiencing. “He kind of saved me right then and there,” Perkins said.

This was a year and a half ago. Following vacation, Perkins followed up with Rubenstein for more rigorous treatments – an experience that produced positive, long-term outcomes for his back. His experience with physical therapy was so positive – specifically Rubenstein’s focus on education and prevention – that Perkins suggested that Rubenstein and his staff provide a spine health workshop at his place of employment.

That suggestion will come to fruition on Wednesday, May 14 when Rubenstein and others on the Jersey Physical Therapy team present a noon workshop at Schlumberger-Princeton Technology Center in Princeton Junction, NJ. The free session, titled “Back at Work: Maintaining a Healthy Spine in the Workplace,” will provide employees with tips on proper posture, ergonomics, breaking up a sedentary job, and maintaining proper spine alignment at a busy workplace.

The workshop is part of Jersey Physical Therapy’s “On the Move” Lifestyle Enhancement Series, which strives to offer free lifestyle- and/or athletic-based workshops in community locations near one of Jersey Physical Therapy’s three locations.

“Our goal through this series is to empower people in our community to learn more about preventing and protecting their bodies from injury and pain,” Rubenstein said. “We’ve made ourselves more accessible to our community because, as physical therapists, we believe in the power of education as it relates to health and improved lifestyle.”

According to Perkins, this perfectly aligns with one of Schlumberger’s most important values. At the company, he said, there exists a “deep awareness regarding safety that’s been engrained in all of our employees.”

“This workshop fits our culture here,” Perkins said. “Schlumberger is really big on safety already, but hearing perspectives from an outside professional, I’m hoping, will help those attending identify patterns and reinforce trends that the company has long worked to establish.”
