Man Arrested, $10K In Cocaine Seized In Mercer County: Police

Barry Carney was also charged with animal abandonment after two dogs were found in his basement.

A Mercer County man was arrested and $10,000 in cocaine was seized following a two-month investigation, Mercer County Prosecutor Angelo J. Onofri said. Barry Carney, 35, of Trenton, is charged with possession of a controlled dangerous substance (cocaine), possession of a controlled dangerous substance with intent to distribute, unlawful possession of a handgun, possession of a firearm during a controlled dangerous substance offense, theft by receiving stolen property, and certain person not to possess a firearm. The prosecutor’s office has filed a motion to have Carney detained.

Members of the Mercer County Narcotics Task Force executed search warrants at Carney’s home on Liberty Street and his black GMC Acadia on Tuesday, Aug. 1, Onofri said.

During the search of the car, detectives said they found about 200 grams of powder cocaine and 10 grams of crack cocaine in a hidden compartment. The estimated street value of the seized powder cocaine is approximately $10,000 and the estimated value of the crack cocaine is approximately $600. They also said they found $3,430.00 in U.S. currency and a loaded H&K handgun, which had been reported stolen out of Washington, D.C.

A search of Carney revealed an additional $2,172 in U.S. currency, detectives said. During a search of the house, detectives said they found two pit bulls in the basement. Animal Control was called to secure the dogs, and Carney was charged with animal abandonment by the Animal Control officers.

Officers with the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office, the Mercer County Sheriff’s Office, the U.S. Marshals Service, and the Hamilton and Trenton police, under the command of the prosecutor’s Special Investigations Unit, assisted with the investigation.
