Man Fatally Hit By Car While Standing In Shoulder Of NJ Turnpike

The 30-year-old man from Levittown, PA was standing outside of his car after a crash before another car hit him in Mercer County: Police.

ROBBINSVILLE, NJ — A 30-year-old man was hit and killed by a car while he standing on the shoulder of the New Jersey Turnpike on Monday morning.

On April 22 at 2:17 a.m., New Jersey State Police(NJSP) Troopers were called to a motor vehicle crash on the New Jersey Turnpike South at milepost 64.1 on the inner roadway in Robbinsville Township.

Based on a preliminary investigation, a BMW 428i was driving southbound and crashed with an unoccupied and disabled BMW 428i, said NJSP Sgt. Jeffrey Lebron.

The driver of the BMW 328i - Alton Smith, 30, from Levittown, PA - parked on the right shoulder and got out of the vehicle.

A Hyundai passenger vehicle driving south then crashed with the disabled BMW 428i, which then hit Smith and the back of the parked BMW 328i, said Lebron.

As a result of the crash, Smith sustained fatal injuries, said Lebron.

The driver of the Hyundai sustained minor injuries and was taken to an area hospital. There were no other injuries reported.

The crash remains under investigation, and there is no additional information available.
