Mendelssohn Symphony by Greater Princeton Youth Orchestra
GPYO performers performing for the community!

The Greater Princeton Youth Orchestra (GPYO) will offer their winter concert for the community, on December 16, 2018, at 3 PM, at the Performing Arts Center in Montgomery High School. Admission is free. The highlight of this concert will be Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 5 in D Major /D minor. Written in 1830 for the 300th anniversary of the Augsburg Confession, this symphony was given the subtitle “Reformation”. The frequent use of the Lutheran Hymn “Ein’ feste Berg is unser Gott”, a hymn written by Martin Luther himself while the Augsberg Confession was in session, creates an atmosphere deserving of the subtitle. Through Mendelssohn’s musical ingenuity, the listener is treated to one of the greatest accomplishments of the symphonic idiom. The concert will feature the GPYO Ensembles, Concert Orchestra and Symphonic Orchestra performing pieces by Berlioz, Elgar, Meyer, and Mendelssohn under the baton of Mr. Kawika Kahalehoe and Mr. Christopher Beckett.
Having also performed at venues such as Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall, GPYO is excited to announce its fourth performance at the Kimmel Center in Philadelphia. It will take place on Sunday, April 7, 2019, at 3 pm. This performance will feature all four GPYO ensembles and Rutgers Bassoon Ensemble, BACOUSTICS.
Founded in 1960, the Greater Princeton Youth Orchestra is one of the oldest regional youth ensembles in the nation. The Greater Princeton Youth Orchestra mission is to provide high-level music performance and education opportunities for talented student musicians and to promote music appreciation within the community. Each year dozens of student musicians from across New Jersey and Pennsylvania take part in the GPYO experience which includes rehearsals, performances, master classes, sectional rehearsals, and the annual Concerto Competition.
GPYO has rolling admissions and conducts auditions several times a year, in May, June, September, and December. For more information, visit www.gpyo.org. The next Audition is December 18, 2018, at Montgomery High School.
