New Report: 'Drunkest' Towns in Each State, Including N.J.

A new report has identified the "drunkest" cities in each state," such as N.J., citing binge drinking as among the U.S.'s biggest problems.

A new report has identified the "drunkest" cities in each state, including N.J., citing binge drinking as among the nation's biggest health crises.

Citing statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, data-compiler 24/7 Wall St. reviewed the metropolitan areas reporting the highest levels of binge and heavy drinking in each state (a similar list showed the top 100 towns in New Jersey for drinking behavior - see below).

Appleton, the drunkest city in Wisconsin, leads the nation with 26.8 percent of adults reporting excessive drinking in the metropolitan area. The Nashville-Davidson–Murfreesboro-Franklin, Tennessee metro area, where 13.5 percent of adults report such a drinking habit, is the "booziest city" in Tennessee, according to the report.

Nationwide, 87.6 percent of adults have drank alcohol at some point in their lives, while 71.0 percent consumed alcohol in the past year. A little more than 56 percent say they drank in the past month and 18 percent of adults report excessive drinking, according to the report.

Trenton was identified as the New Jersey city that was the "drunkest," saying the percentage of adults binge or heavy drinking is 18.2 and the percentage of alcohol related driving deaths is 23.6 percent.

"In Trenton, 18.2% of adults report binge or heavy drinking, a slightly larger share than across New Jersey and the country as a whole," according to the report. "According to the CDC, excessive alcohol consumption is more likely among households earning $75,000 or more per year. Trenton, one of the highest income areas in the country, fits this pattern. The median household income in Trenton of $72,417 a year is roughly in line with the state median income but well above the national median income of $55,775 annually."

Last year, Roadsnacks.net, which provided a list of N.J. Towns with the highest rate of Ashley Madison ”cheaters,” differed in its compilation a list of the ”drunkest” towns based on the number of available places to buy booze, and by how often people are talking about drinking.

The study noted that New Jersey ”is right in the middle in the nation in terms of the amount of beer and spirits consumed every year.”
