NJ American Water: No More Chlorine in Princeton Water Supply

The water company will return to disinfecting its water with chloramines following three months using chlorine to eliminate excess ammonia.

That chlorine taste and smell in Princeton’s water is about to be a thing of the past.

After two months of using chlorine for water maintenance at its Canal Road and Raritan Millstone Water Treatment plants, New Jersey American Water will resume use of chloramines (a mixture of chlorine and ammonia) to disinfect water at those plants on April 15.

In the middle of January, New Jersey American Water temporarily changed its treatment process from chloramines to chlorine to perform maintenance on its chemical feed systems and remove any residual ammonia from the water distribution system.

During this time, customers may have noticed a slight chlorine taste and odor in their water. That taste and odor will disappear once New Jersey American Water resumes use of chloramines, the water company said Friday morning.

New Jersey American Water has used chloramines for 25 years to disinfect its water supplies. It meets all USEPA and NJDEP drinking water standards.
