Freedom from addiction is possible. Leah’s story is living proof.

After more than a decade trapped in opioid addiction and more than 30 attempts at treatment, Leah found lasting recovery at Hackensack Meridian Carrier Clinic. Her journey began at Carrier’s Blake Recovery Center, an inpatient detox and rehab treatment program located on Carrier’s scenic Belle Mead campus, just a few miles from Princeton. What followed was not an overnight transformation, but a hard-won rebuilding of her life, one rooted in compassion, community and personal surrender.

Leah’s substance use started early. She smoked marijuana throughout high school, but everything changed after a surgery when she was prescribed pain medication. Mixing the prescription opioids with marijuana triggered something powerful. “When I smoked and took the meds, something sparked in my body - like this was what I had been missing my whole life,” she recalls. Within a year, her use escalated to heroin.

As addiction tightened its grip, Leah lost her sense of self. The values and morals she once held disappeared, replaced by a single focus on survival through use. She no longer recognized who she was. For more than 10 years, addiction dictated every aspect of her life, sending her in and out of treatment centers across the region.

Blake Recovery Center was not an instant solution. It took several attempts before recovery truly took hold. But each return brought her closer to understanding what she needed to do for herself. “It took a long time for me to figure out how to surrender,” Leah said. “I ultimately realized it wasn’t something someone could tell me how to do. I had to figure it out on my own.”

At Carrier, Leah found something that had been missing elsewhere - a genuine sense of belonging. From nurses and therapists to counselors and maintenance staff, she felt surrounded by people who treated her with dignity and respect and understood addiction not as a failure, but as an illness. The environment felt less like an institution and more like a family dynamic that helped her stay engaged when recovery felt overwhelming.

The support made it possible for Leah to do the difficult internal work required to heal. Over time, she began to redefine what recovery meant to her. In Narcotics Anonymous, she often heard the phrase, “a life beyond your wildest dreams.” She once imagined that meant wealth or status. Today, she knows better.

The real rewards of recovery, Leah says, are quieter and far more meaningful. They include repairing the relationship with her mother and being present with her family in moments that truly matter. One of the most profound came when her father passed away while she was one year sober. Being there, fully present and clear-headed, was something she never thought possible - and something that continues to motivate her commitment to sobriety.

Today, Leah can look in the mirror and smile, proud of the work she has done to reclaim her life. She no longer sees herself as the “hopeless addict” she once believed she was. Instead, she stands as someone who has endured, recovered and now offers hope to others who may feel lost in their own struggle.
