If all four year olds could attend public pre-k, where they learnt their phonics, they would all be readers by the time they finished kindergarten or earlier. This would give all five year olds the opportunity to become early readers, sooner, letting them delve into non-fiction texts sooner and with ease. This is a goal of the common core state standards adopted by 47 states .
