Princeton Academy Gives Back for Thanksgiving

Thirty-one eighth graders from Princeton Academy of the Sacred Heart spent Tuesday morning at HomeFront, helping volunteers and staffers sort food, stock shelves and prepare holiday meal boxes to be distributed to those in need.

HomeFront, a Mercer county agency providing food, housing and a comprehensive range of services to families in need, hopes to feed 1,000 needy families this Thanksgiving.

“HomeFront is completely invested in helping this community move forward. Our mission is to end homelessness in Central New Jersey,” explained Djenaba Figueroa, the volunteer coordinator for HomeFront. “Help from the community ensures we will meet our goals. Today, these young men helped us get organized for the holiday season. We are grateful for their help.”

The students also presented several large baskets filled to the brim with food collected at the Academy by faculty and staff.

Student Bobby Vogel, of Yardley, Penn., was happy to be a part of this service project and enjoyed working with his classmates.

“To think we helped HomeFront get ready for Thanksgiving made us all feel good,” said Vogel. “We felt that our work helped make a difference to families who need our help.”

Service projects at Princeton Academy are much more than a holiday event. Students regularly organize bake sales and service projects that support their local community. Maggie Kelly, the director of development and eighth grade advisor at the Academy, also went with the students and said watching the boys help was particularly inspiring.

“Our students were respectful of the volunteers, eager to work, and worked well as a team,” added Kelly “They are aware of their responsibility to give back to their community.”
