Princeton Academy Sends Hunger Packing

The students have already started collecting items and are encouraging everyone to donate something to the drive. Unsure of what to donate? Mercer Street Friends sent some guidelines:After reading recent visiting author DyAnne DiSalvo's book "Uncle Willy and the Soup Kitchen," the third graders were moved and inspired to help those in need in their community.

So, they recently started a food drive to benefit Send Hunger Packing, which is a program by Mercer Street Friends that provides less fortunate children with food.

Every Friday, the Send Hunger Packing program provides these kids with easily prepared and nutritious food for breakfast and lunch for Saturday and Sunday. In many cases, this is the only source of food for these students during the weekend.

The students have already started collecting items and are encouraging everyone to donate something to the drive. Unsure of what to donate? Mercer Street Friends sent some guidelines:

  • Shelf stable 2-percent reduced fat milk (8 oz single serving size)
  • Single serving cereal bowls or boxes
  • Starkist Tuna to Go (or equivalent)
  • Bumblebee Tuna Salad with crackers Ready to Go (or equivalent)
  • Chef Boyardee Microwaveable bowls (or equivalent)
  • Hormel Completes Entrees (or equivalent)
  • Campbell or Progresso microwaveable soups (or equivalent)
  • Peanut Butter (18 oz)
  • Jif to Go (little peanut butter cups)
  • Grape jelly in plastic container (14-18 oz)
  • Yo on the Go (yogurt smoothie drink in shelf stable brick packs)
  • Granola bars
  • Shelf stable pudding cups
Donations for the Send Hunger Packing food drive can be placed in the brown cardboard boxes in the Narthex now until Friday, May 9. We hope everyone can help the third grade in their endeavor to give back to the community!
