The Hawks crushed their competition this year, ending the season undefeated with a record of 6-0.
The team took off this year, promptly sweeping both Princeton Day and Princeton Junior squash teams. The players then took their winning streak out of state to Pennsylvania, where they nabbed another win over Radnor.
Just as the season started, it ended in success when head coach Matt Trowbridge took six of his best players to compete in the 2014 National Middle School Squash Championships in New Haven, Conn. The players went up against 16 other teams in their division and ended up taking fourth place — the highest Princeton Academy has ever been seeded in its three years of competing in the competition.
“The ladder was competitive throughout the year, with several players jumping up to higher spots from previous seasons,” said Trowbridge. “Most impressive, however, was this team's character and sportsmanship in its victories as well as individual defeats.”
The players exceeded several personal bests during the tournament. Student Bobby Vogel, of Yardley, Pen., excelled in the semi finals, ending up only two points away from upsetting Rye Country Day. In the quarterfinals, Princeton Academy turned the tables by beating St. Luke's, which had won the previous year.
“Although we lose many eighth graders, there are even more younger players who have been working hard and waiting patiently for their time to shine,” added Trowbridge. “Here's to continued hard work and success of all kinds next season.”
