Princeton Academy Students Help Trenton Young Scholars

The students at Princeton Academy think kids of all ages and backgrounds should get a shot at a great education and on Tuesday, they went to Trenton to help make that a reality.

More than 30 eighth graders, on Dec. 3, spent the day volunteering at the Young Scholars’ Institute (YSI), a Trenton-based nonprofit learning center that helps less fortunate youths in grade levels pre-kindergarten through 12.

The YSI is headquartered in an older, large building in downtown Trenton and on Dec. 3, the Princeton Academy students went to help with its maintenance. Throughout the day, they worked to organize the new library, curriculum and SAT prep rooms, categorized books and helped sort donated clothing by size and gender.

Kim Carter-Trinacria, the Princeton Academy religion teacher, was one of the teachers who accompanied the students and was moved when Jerri Morrison, the founder of the YSI, thanked the boys for their hard work.

“She said ‘these projects might seem small, but they are not only helping us, but they are indirectly helping all the students we service in this facility,’” recalled Carter-Trinacria.

The students also just started a gently used clothing drive, which will benefit the YSI. They plan on delivering those donations near the end of December.
