Princeton Native Brings Kids Hip-Hop Program To Local Schools

Nicole Giacopelli combined her love of teaching and passion for dance to create Coco Dance Kids LLC.

PRINCETON, NJ — Combining her two passions, teaching and dance, Princeton native Nicole Giacopelli has created Coco Dance Kids, a kids hip-hop program that she is bringing to local schools.

Giacopelli grew up in Manhattan before moving to Princeton, and has always had a passion for dance. She began teaching dance at 14 years old and through that decided to pursue her master's in elementary education.

"I found my love of teaching through dance and figured why not combine my teaching passion and passion for dance to be able to create this program," Giacopelli said.

Giacopelli had always dreamed of opening a dance studio but didn’t love the hours. So she launched Coco Dance Kids LLC in December, which allows her to bring her program to schools in the area.

Since launching, she already has three schools signed up including University School in Princeton, Princeton Academy of Sacred Heart and Valley Brook Country School in Long Valley.

“So many parents are always running around dropping off and picking up their children from extracurricular activities. This program is in their children's school giving the parents some breathing room,” Giacopelli said.

Her hip-hop program is available for both boys and girls and students of all ages. In the class she teaches stretching, routines to focus the mind and develop technique, strength and flexibility. There are also floor exercises and an obstacle course.

Overall students learn to build calisthenics and rhythm to music, create body awareness, learn footwork patterns and builds confidence.

"I have created this program to continue to keep the students engaged. The students don't stand in a line and learn dance moves the entire time, we move around the room, I bring different activities," Giacopelli said.

The program runs for eight to 10 weeks with a performance at the end of the program and each co-ed class lasts one-hour.
