Princeton District Cancels After-School Activities Due To Severe Weather

Forecasters warn of wind gusts up to 80 mph, possible tornadoes, and flash flooding across New Jersey on Monday evening.

PRINCETON, NJ - Princeton Public Schools has cancelled all after-school activities on Monday as a tornado watch and severe storm threat moves across Mercer County.

Tiger Time will continue to operate as normal, the district confirmed.

The cancellations come as the National Weather Service has placed 16 New Jersey counties — including Mercer — under a tornado watch set to expire at 7 p.m. Forecasters are warning of "a few" tornadoes, quarter-sized hail, and wind gusts reaching up to 80 mph.

Storms could begin as early as 2 p.m., but conditions are expected to peak between 5 p.m. and 11 p.m., moving west to east across the state.

"The primary threat remains wind, however the threat for tornadoes is increasing," the National Weather Service said Monday.

Even outside of thunderstorms, wind gusts of 35 to 50 mph are possible across the region. Heavy rainfall — potentially reaching 1 to 2 inches per hour at its peak — could cause flash flooding, with urban areas along the I-95 corridor at particular risk. Up to 1.5 inches of rain is forecast overall.

Residents are urged to remain weather aware through Monday evening. Windy and cold conditions are expected to linger into Tuesday before temperatures trend back toward seasonal normals later in the week.
