School District To Examine Handling Of Mental Health Issues In Wake Of Princeton Student's Suicide: Report

Reducing stress and helping students ask their friends for help will part of the process, school officials said this week.

Princeton, NJ -- The Princeton Public School District will review its district-wide health curriculum and look at ways to “destigmatize mental health issues,” the Princeton Packet reports.

Princeton Superintendent of Schools Dr. Stephen Cochrane made these comments during the first Board of Education meeting held since a high school student committed suicide earlier this month.

He said part of that process will be helping students find ways to reduce stress and find ways to make it easier for anyone experiencing suicidal thoughts to ask their friends for help.

Students at the meeting said they wanted to help, including creating a non-intrusive survey and forming a “mental health council” at the high school, according to the report.
