Princeton Students Admit Vaping In Recent Survey: Report

About 21 percent of students at four local schools said they vape, the Princeton Packet reports.

PRINCETON, NJ — About 21 percent of students at four local high schools vape, according to a recent survey. The results were revealed during the "Vaping: What You Need To Know" forum that was held in Princeton Monday night, April 30.

Out of 526 students who took the survey, 108 (20.5 percent) said they vape, the Princeton Packet reports. The most popular substance to vape among students at Princeton High School, Stuart Country Day School, the Hun School and Princeton Day School is nicotine (77.2 percent).

Although it is illegal to sell vaping products to anyone under the age of 21, many of the products are purchased online, according to the report. A majority of those who vape end up smoking cigarettes.

The forum was co-sponsored by Corner House, the Princeton Police Department and the Princeton Alcohol and Drug Alliance. National vaping authority Dr. Linda Richter, Director of Policy Research and Analysis at The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse, spoke at the forum, and there was a panel discussion.

Vaping is defined as "the act of inhaling and exhaling the aerosol, often referred to as vapor, which is produced by an e-cigarette or similar device," by the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse. Since e-cigarettes first became popular around 2010, there has been a national debate on the impact vaping can have on one's health.

Many towns in the state have cracked down on the practice, as the Centers for Disease Control has said that although vaping is better for people than smoking traditional cigarettes, it still isn’t healthy. For more on the issue, visit cdc.gov.
