Not Considering Jasna Polana As Area In Need Of Redevelopment, Says Princeton

Contrary to sale listing, Princeton officials said there were no plans to consider the site as an Area in Need of Redevelopment.

PRINCETON, NJ — Jasna Polana, the 222-acre golf course and private club is on sale. The realtors of the property at Province Line Road and Route 206, suggest the site could possibly be a redevelopment site.

On Tuesday night, Princeton officials said they were aware of the property being marketed for sale, but there were no plans to consider the site as an Area in Need of Redevelopment.

“On behalf of the Governing Body, we wish to make explicitly clear that there are no current plans to investigate or consider designating the Jasna Polana golf course property as an area in need of redevelopment. Although the Master Plan update process is still ongoing, there have been no indications thus far that this property will be recommended as such,” Mayor Mark Freda and Council President Mia Sacks said in a statement.

In a report by Planet Princeton, the broker suggested the Community Master Plan will call for development on the site “with the potential to be designated as an Area in Need of Redevelopment.”

The broker also suggested that the buyer could continue using the property as a golf course but develop the surrounding land, or abandon the golf course and redevelop the land, the site reported.

In May, Princeton opened a survey for residents to provide input on middle housing issues, indoor recreation, community center and more.

The survey listed four sites, including Jasna Polana, and asked residents how these sites could be redeveloped if the owners seek redevelopment.

The exact wording of the survey was:

TPC Jasna Polana represents a large property in Princeton and, if operations ceased, could require consideration of alternative uses. If so, what uses do you think are appropriate? (Please check all that apply)

  • Large apartment buildings (more than 10 apartments)
  • Small apartment buildings (3-10 apartments)
  • Townhouses
  • Two-family homes
  • Single-family homes on small lots
  • Assisted or supportive housing
  • Open space/recreation
  • Retail
  • Supermarket
  • Hotel
  • Entertainment Venue

“Any implication in the marketing materials for Jasna Polana that a more dense project, or expansion of uses beyond what is allowed under the current zoning will be permitted, is unwarranted,” Freda and Sacks said.

“No amendments to the current zoning ordinance for this site are contemplated by Princeton Council at this time.”
