'Smoke Condition' Reported At Princeton High School Friday Morning

An HVAC malfunction resulted in what police described as a "smoke condition" at the school.

PRINCETON, NJ — An HVAC malfunction resulted in a "smoke condition" at Princeton High School Friday morning, Princeton Police Department Spokesman Sgt. Frederick Williams said. There were no flames associated with the incident, and no one was injured.

The smoke condition triggered fire alarms, which resulted in evacuations of anyone who was using the facilities at the time. The building was ventilated.

A staff member at the high school noticed a burning smell in the school’s fitness center at about 8:30 a.m., according to the school district. A motor in the HVAC system that had overheated and shorted out, possibly as a result of power outages from storms on Thursday.

"There was no damage to the building and the HVAC motor will be replaced," Princeton Public Schools Communications Coordinator Brenda Sewell said. "By 9:35 a.m., students and staff at the high school were allowed back into the building."
