Steinway Spirio Piano Demonstration Highlights Princeton Festival Gala

The gala is Saturday night in Lawrenceville.

PRINCETON, NJ — What is being termed as a “technological breakthrough” will take center stage at this year’s Princeton Festival Gala.

In addition to the gala’s traditional helping of fun, good food, dancing, and auctions, there will be a demonstration of the new Steinway Spirio piano, which accurately recreates live performances in the listener’s own living room.

Jacobs Music, the area’s exclusive Steinway dealer and a long-time supporter of the Festival and its piano competition, will give a demonstration on the Steinway Spirio during the cocktail hour. This will be the first local public demonstration of the new instrument.

“Listening to the Spirio is an uncanny experience,” Princeton Festival General and Artistic Director Richard Tang Yuk said. “There’s nothing mechanical about it – you could swear it was a live person playing the music.”

Spirio owners can choose from more than 1,700 selections, from Bach to Billy Joel, captured from the playing of Steinway artists.

The system registers over 1,000 measurements of speed on every keystroke plus 200 pedal positions per second. The result is what festival organizers describe as a “you-are-there” concert experience. The instrument can also be played like a normal piano.

The Gala takes place on Saturday, April 22, 6 p.m. at Greenacres Country Club in Lawrenceville. Cocktails-only and full dinner reservations can be made at http://princetonfestival.org/event/2017-gala/ until April 20.
