Can Young Blood Help an Old Brain?

Studies on mice indicate that certain aspects of aging can be slowed or reversed by blood from younger mice.

Parabiosis is the process that surgically links the circulatory systems of lab mice, so that their blood co-mingles. These studies date back to the1950s and indicate that blood from young mice seems to have a number of rejuvenating effects on the older mice, including effects on their brain.

Recently, researchers have attempted to isolate proteins in human blood plasma that may be responsible for improving brain function of the older mice.

In 2016, two startup clinics were launched in the U.S. to bring the concept of "young blood" to human beings through pay-to-participate clinical trials. This is an anti-aging strategy and could also possibly counteract chronic disease.

At one of these clinics is Ambrosia, in Monterey, California, if you are 35 or older, you can pay $8,000 to receive an infusion of 1.5 liters of plasma from a donor between the ages of 16 and 25. PayPal co-founder Peter Thiel is one of the prominent personalities fueling the buzz around how blood transfusions may help fight aging.
