Flame-retardant chemicals can migrate from the foam into the household dust and air. This dust can be breathed in and can also fall on someone’s hands or their food and consequently be ingested.

Researchers have detected a flame-retardant chemical called TDCIPP in 100% of all individuals that they tested. TDCIPP is so widespread that o one tested escaped having it detected in their bodies! This chemical was removed from children’s pajamas in the 1970s, over concern of it causing cancer, but is still used in other consumer products. High levels of flame-retardant chemicals used to make FireMaster flame-retardant products were also detected. The study found the average concentration of flame retardants in children, was close to five times that of their mothers. Children are thought to have higher exposures to many types of chemicals because they spend more time on the floor, where contaminated dust settles and children also put their hands in their mouths more often than adults. Children who wash their hands at least five times a day had 30% - 50% lower levels of flame retardants on their hands than children who wash their hands less frequently.
