How can the weather change your mood?

We don't usually think about it much, but the way you feel on any given day, may actually be linked to the weather.

Spending time outdoors on a sunny day makes many of us feel better. Exposure to sunlight is tied to the production of serotonin. Serotonin is the brain hormone that is associated with mood elevation and feeling good. Serotonin production also falls when it is gloomy outside. This is one of the causes of seasonal affective disorder (SAD), which is sometimes referred to as the winter blues.

People that are stuck indoors on a nice day, can also have their mood negatively impacted, since they are missing out on a gorgeous day.

Pleasant weather can also be associated with better memory and improved cognitive function,. But weather extremes, both cold and hot, can be associated with a lower mood. People also tend to leave more generous tips when eating out. One French study found women were more receptive to giving their phone number to an attractive stranger on sunny days, as compared to cloudy days.
