Longtime Volunteer Appointed To Borough Council

Joe Verdone will run in this November's election to keep the seat, borough officials said

A longtime Ramsey volunteer has been appointed to a seat on the borough council. According to Joe Verdone, 71, he was chosen August 8 to fill a seat vacated by Bruce Vozeh, who was hired as borough administrator last month.

Verdone said he believes his longtime career at IBM, history of volunteering in Ramsey, and 35 years living in the borough made him a good candidate for the job.

“I helped found the Greater Ramsey Chapter of UNICO,” he said. The Italian-American organization raises funds, completes and promotes community service projects and gives scholarships to local students. “I am retired now and I have more time to give back to the community,” the Mahwah Tea Party member said. “So, I decided to get more involved in politics.”

According to a NorthJersey.com report, Verdone was one of three possible candidates for the job. Verdone, Howard Cantor and Alex Bogaenko were all submitted by the Republican County Committee as prospects, the report said. Verdone was chosen and sworn in after a mayor and council deliberation at a borough council meeting earlier this month.

According to Ramsey borough clerk Meredith Bendian, Verdone will assume the role through the end of this year. “He will run in November for the two-year unexpired term,” that was left in Vozeh’s original term, she said.
