Lower Blood Pressure With Probiotics

can probiotics actually be used to lower high blood pressure?

I just posted yesterday about many of the benefits of having well balanced gut bacteria. Here is another one.

Australian researchers have discovered that well balanced gut bacteria can also lower blood pressure. After analyzing data from nine different randomized, controlled trials involving people with either normal or high blood pressure, they found that participants who consumed probiotics each day for at least eight weeks had lower blood pressure than those who did not take probiotic supplements or eat foods containing probiotics. More specifically, the probiotic users’ systolic pressure, which is the top number, was on average 3.56 mm Hg lower and their diastolic, which is the bottom number, was on the average 2.38 mm Hg lower.

The researchers noted that the greatest drop in blood pressure occurred in those with the highest pressures to begin with. They also concluded that the best results were obtained when a variety of strains of probiotics were consumed. Lastly, participants didn’t experience lower blood pressure when taking a probiotic supplement that contained fewer than one billion bacteria.
