Magnesium & Heart Health

Magnesium is the fourth most abundant mineral in your body and also the most commonly deficient.

There are over 3,750 magnesium-binding sites on human proteins. More than 300 different enzymes contain magnesium.

It appears that 50 to as high as 80% of Americans are magnesium deficient.

Magnesium plays an important role in your body's biochemical processes, many of which are crucial for proper metabolic function.

  • Relaxation of blood vessels.
  • Muscle and nerve function, including the action of your heart muscle.
  • Proper formation of bones and teeth.
  • Regulation of blood sugar and insulin sensitivity, which is important for the prevention of type 2 diabetes. Magnesium is essential for insulin release by pancreatic β-cells, and acts as a messenger for insulin action.

The magnesium and calcium balance is also very important, since calcium is also important for heart health. With a magnesium deficiency, your heart cannot function properly. Hypertension (high blood pressure), cardiac arrhythmia, cardiovascular disease (CVD) and sudden cardiac death can all potentially occur with either a magnesium deficiency or an altered calcium/magnesium balance.

Lacking magnesium also tends to trigger muscle spasms, which can be very bad for your heart, especially if you have excessive calcium.

Signs of a magnesium Deficiency:

1. Fatigue or weakness

2. A loss of appetite

3. Heart arrhythmias

4. Muscle spasms, cramps or eye twitches
