Broccoli has been know for quite some time to be very nutritious, but recent research has shown that broccoli is more of a superfood than was ever thought!
Sulforaphane is a naturally occurring organic sulfur compound that is found in broccoli that has been found to cause apoptosis, or programmed cell death in colon cancer cells. Sulforaphane also has been found to kill off breast cancer stem cells.
Another study explained that broccoli reduces the risks for certain forms of cancer. This protective effect has been linked to the presence of glucoraphanin, a precursor of sulforaphane. The same study referenced some of the ways this takes place, including the inhibition of tumor development, cell growth, proliferation and apoptosis.

In other studies, broccoli has played a part in lowering risk factors in lung cancer and prostate cancer, which are two of the most common cancer types in the U.S.

The University of Illinois found a relationship between eating broccoli and lowering the risk of several other diseases, including asthma, type 2 diabetes and coronary heart disease.
