A New Study Links Artificial Sweeteners to Diabetes

It is ironic that people use artificial sweeteners to try to avoid diabetes, not to cause it!

I have known for a number of years about the theory that artificial sweeteners contribute to not only diabetes, but also to weight gain. I am glad that clinical studies are confirming these theories. This way, after people get the facts, which will take a while, they can avoid this pitfall.

Researchers at the University of Adelaide in Australia have completed a new study that indicates that artificial sweeteners impair the body’s response to glucose. That can lead to the reduction of the control of blood sugar levels and eventually to diabetes.

The results were remarkably fast. It only took two weeks for the group that was using the artificial sweeteners, to show adverse effects to their blood sugar levels. These effects included a reduction in numbers of the gut peptide GLP-1, which limits the spike in blood sugar after eating.

It is difficult to get funding for studies like this one, since there is no corporate profits to be made by proving this correlation. There is only money to be lost. What is to be gained are health, longevity, reduced medical bills and increased productivity.

When will the media, the American Diabetes Association, the FDA, and other health agencies, stop supporting the use of artificial sweeteners?
