Swiss scientists recently found that consuming pomegranates, may slow the aging process.

Pomegranates are considered by many to be a "Superfood".

The anti-aging compound that is associated with pomegranates is called urolithin A.

Urolithin A is a metabolite that is naturally produced by your body. This occurs when compounds called ellagitannins, which are found in pomegranates, are broken down by the bacteria in your gut.

Studies over many years have suggested that there are age-fighting properties contained in pomegranates, but before now, there was no evidence to identify what exactly was causing this to happen.

Pomegranates are technically a berry and are actually mentioned a number of times in the Old Testament. Pomegranates contain antioxidants that can destroy free radicals. Free radicals are associated with inflammation and inflammation is associated with many chronic diseases, such as diabetes and heart disease.

Pomegranates may help to prevent heart disease, by:

1. Helping to protect LDL cholesterol from oxidative damage

2. Decrease carotid artery thickness

3. Improve cardiac blood flow

If you are taking medications, you should consult your pharmacist prior to adding pomegranate to your diet, since pomegranates can possible interfere with certain medications.
