Ramsey Water Privatization Proposal To Headline Screening, Discussion
'Blue Gold: World Water Wars' screening is Tuesday at the library
The possibility of privatizing Ramsey’s water supply will be one of the topics discussed at Tuesday night’s free documentary screening of “Blue Gold: World Water Wars,” at the Ramsey Free Public Library.
The film focuses on the private ownership of water sources in both the developed world and in developing countries. According to Karina Wilkinson of Food & Water Watch, one of the groups co-sponsoring the screening, a discussion after the screening will focus on recent attempts to privatize the municipal water supply in Ramsey, Newark and Trenton.
According to a NorthJersey.com article, borough residents and local groups expressed opposition to a proposal to sell Ramsey’s water and sewer systems last summer. Borough officials proposed privatizing the system due to rising costs of operating it, but rejected bids from local companies in July 2011 that they believed were too low, the report said.
