On Monday, Atlantic Health System presented the Wharton Town Council with an automated external defibrillator (AED) —a portable device that instructs users to deliver an electric shock to get a heart beating normally after a cardiac event—as part of its Project Heartbeat initiative. Project Heartbeat was developed to empower communities with the training, equipment, and confidence necessary to respond to cardiac emergencies and potentially save lives. Wharton mayor William J. Chegwidden is pictured here holding the AED.
