Alphonso A. Tomaino, 89, of Shrewsbury died March 22, 2011 at Chapin Hill Nursing Center. Born in Red Bank, Allie, as many of his friends knew him actually began his birth at the corner of Leighton and Leonard as he liked to say. Allie was a communicant of St. Anthony of Padua Roman Catholic Church, Red Bank. He was a devoted church member. He served there as an usher at 12 o;clock Mass for more than 50 years. He also gave the Father's Club at Christian Brothers Academy, Lincroft more then 30 years of service. He was a graduate of Red Bank High School. After graduation, Allie went to work at Fort Monmouth until he was drafted into the U.S. Army, serving in the South Pacific during World War II. He returned home to Red Bank to marry his sweet heart Josephine Domanico. In 1947, Allie opened Al's Mobil Service Station then located at Broad Street and Maple Avenue, Red Bank. As proprietor, the became known as "Friendly Al". In the late 1960s. Allie retired from the gas station and the then saw an opportunity and began acquiring commercial real estate in Shrewsbury. One of his tenants was Buxton's Country Restaurant, Route 35, Shrewsbury and because of his love for the ice cream business he helped behind the counter serving ice cream. By the year 2000, Allie had built or purchased seven buildings with a total of 30 tenants. For his hobby, Allie loved working. He could always be seen cleaning one of the parking lots, cutting grass or raking leaves. He cared very much for his tenants Later in life his great joy in life was was having his two grandchildren, Bobby and Allison with him.
He was predeceased by his parents William and Grace Tomaino, brother Valentino, brother-in-law Ralph Santangelo. Allie is survived by his loving wife of 64 years Josephine Tomaino, their son Robert A. Tomanio, daughter-in-law Donna Tomanio, grandchildren Bobby and Allison Tomanio of Monmouth Beach; three brothers, William, John and Mario Tomanio, sister-in-law Deloris Joseph and sister-in-law Phyllis Santangelo, nephew Frank (Sandy) Santangelo, nieces Laura McLarnon, and her son, Dylan, niece Joy Rathemacher and her husband, Chris.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, March 26 at St. Anthony of Padua Roman Catholic Church, 121 Bridge Avenue, Red Bank. Internment to follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Middletown. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made out to: Alzheimer's Association, Greater NJ Chapter, 400 Morris Avenue, Suite 251, Denville, NJ 07934.
