Wells's novel War of the Worlds, about a Martian invasion of Earth beginning in Grover's Mill, NJ.The original broadcast came at a tumultuous time in world history, with the rise of fascism in several European countries and the growing use of radio to broadcast news bulletins of world events. The format of this radio play convinced some listeners that an invasion was actually happening, in October 1938.
