Mastro Montessori Academy To Present “Harlequin,” A Joyous Children’s Opera Based on an Italian Folktale
Harlequin is one of those mysterious words that today refers coloring of Great Danes or the publisher of feel-good love stories. But in theater, Harlequin was the best know character from the Italian Commedia dell-Arte. Popular in the 16th century, this bawdy comedy was the precursor to English Harlequinade, Pantomime, and American Vaudeville. Harlequin wore a distinctive outfit made from a pattern of diamond-checkered tights much like today’s clowns, golfers, and used car salesmen. How did this unusual costume originate? The Children’s Opera “Harlequin” unveils the secret of this centuries-old mystery.

The talented students of Little Silver’s Mastro Montessori will stage “Harlequin” on Saturday, June 23, 2:00pm, at the Two River Theater, 21 Bridge Avenue, in Red Bank. The story takes place a little Italian village during the Renaissance before “Carnival,” the last day of Lent. Harlequin, the son of a poor widow, is encouraged by his friends to participate in the celebration, but has no costume to wear. His friends all try to help by contributing a small scrap of cloth with which to make a costume. He falls asleep and has a whimsical, phantasmagorical dream. What amazing day awaits Harlequin on the day of Carnival after he awakes from his dream? Join us in a performance that will be sure to shake down the house!
Adults and children alike will enjoy the lively performance performed by current Mastro Montessori students and a few of its illustrious alumni. Youth Opera International will guide the cast through word, song, and dance.
