'Large' Tinton Falls Mulch Fire Sends Smoke Across Jersey Shore

A weekend fire at a Monmouth County recycling plant sent plumes of smoke as far as Ocean Township, officials said.

TINTON FALLS, NJ - Smoke emerging from a large mulch fire on Shafto Road in Tinton Falls could be seen across the Jersey Shore over the weekend, according to officials.

According to a Facebook post from Tinton Falls’ Wayside Fire Company, a 150 foot-by-200 foot pile of mulch that was burning resulted in “several calls of service for smoke in the area” at Mazza’s Recycling Plant on April 24.

“With the assistance of Engine 37-2-73 from Wanamassa Fire Company, Engines 2-75, 1-80 and Ladders 2-90, 4-91 from District 36 were able to set up individual water supplies and establish a perimeter to extinguish the fire before it could spread further on the property,” the fire department wrote.
