Online Voting Still Open for RBC's "Power to the Pedestrian" Campaign

RBC students create a video for their "Power to the Pedestrian" Campaign for the NJBA "Champion Schools" Contest-Vote online until May 11th.

The Red Bank Catholic “Hot Topics” Club has entered the N.J. Brain Injury Alliance “Champion School” Contest. The club has been working this semester on its Power to the Pedestrian campaign which focuses awareness on the rights of the pedestrian and the responsibilities shared by both pedestrians and drivers alike. This issue is particularly important to the Red Bank Catholic community as it has lost two of its alumni due to pedestrian car accidents in recent years. The students are dedicating their work on the campaign to the memory of RBC graduates Julia DeFelice and Kelly Gordon.

The winning school will receive a texting and driving simulating machine for its Driver Education Program, a powerful teaching tool for young drivers.

RBC’s goal this year is to bring attention to the cross walk in front of the school. Before and after school the traffic can be heavy and sometimes drivers do not stop for students to cross the street. The campaign committee worked with the Red Bank Police to improve the situation. A digital ”Stop for Pedestrians” sign was installed and the police participated in the RBC “Pedestrian Power Day” which featured activities and presentations to educate both RBC and St. James Elementary School students about pedestrian responsibilities.

Club members designed coloring books to teach the St. James students rules for safe walking, distributed glow in the dark tags for them to attach to their backpacks or clothes, and took a group of the students on a walk in town to demonstrate the correct way to use cross walks and traffic lights. They also sold pedestrian awareness T-Shirts, and attended an attorney’s presentation about the consequences of dangerous driving.

The campaign culminates with the release of an entertaining VIDEO, created by and featuring club members showcasing the “Power to the Pedestrian” message.
