Red Bank’s K-9 Hunter Assists In Locating Shoplifting Suspect

The four-legged member of Red Bank police located a suspect who allegedly shoplifted compressed gas from the Broad Street Walgreens.

RED BANK, NJ – With the help of one K-9, officers from the Red Bank Borough Police Department located and arrested a Neptune man accused of shoplifting from a Broad Street pharmacy, according to Police Chief Darren McConnell.

On Labor Day, officers from the Red Bank Police Department responded to a report of shoplifting at the Walgreens on Broad Street at approximately 8 p.m. Upon police arrival, the suspect had already fled the scene. It was reported that the accused had stolen several cartridges of compressed air or gas, which are oftentimes misused by individuals attempting to obtain a level of intoxication.

The responding officer, Ptl. Stanley Balmer, utilized K-9 Hunter to locate the suspect. The four-legged member of the police department ultimately found the suspect hiding in “dense trees and underbrush” near the store.

Upon the arrival of additional responders, the accused resisted police attempts to take him into custody. After a brief struggle, he was ultimately handcuffed, according to McConnell.

The suspect was named Marcus Seward, 33, of Neptune, who was charged with shoplifting, possession of toxic chemical for the purpose of intoxication, inhalation of toxic chemical for purpose of intoxication, and resisting arrest.

Following his arrest, Seward was transported to the Monmouth County Correctional Institution.
