Riverview President Reaches Milestone

President Tim Hogan has reached a 10-year milestone with the hospital this September, a recent release states, a decade spent transforming the Red Bank hospital into a nationally-recognized and award-winning medical center.

According to the release, Hogan has been at the helm during several significant events at the hospital. Within his first six months, Hogan oversaw a $63 million renovation of the hospital, the largest single undertaking in Riverview’s history. The renovation included the construction of the K. Hovnanian Pavilion, which aided the hospital’s emergency care capabilities.

In 2005, Hogan helped bring the revolutionary CyberKnife to Riverview, one of the first in the area to do so. To date, more than 1,000 procedures using the CyberKnife, a non-invasive alternative to surgery for the removal of cancerous tumors and other growths, have been completed at the hospital.

Recently, Hogan has been responsible for helping organize a fundraising campaign being used to . The expansion, a center for surgical excellence, is 22,000 square feet and is expected to open in 2012.

By the strength of the leader’s commitment, the power of the team is unleashed.” There is no better living example of this quote than Timothy J. Hogan, president of Riverview Medical Center. For the last decade, Hogan has been at the helm of the Medical Center, establishing Riverview as one of the regional leaders in health care today.

Before coming to Riverview Medical Center, Hogan was no stranger to the world of health care. Beginning in 1993, he served as vice president of operations at Mercy Hospital of Buffalo, N.Y. for five years before moving to Cincinnati, Ohio. In 1998, Hogan was appointed chief operating officer and acting president of Mercy Hospital Anderson in Cincinnati. In 2001, after a national search, Hogan accepted the position as president of Riverview Medical Center and moved to the east coast for this career opportunity and to be closer to family. Hogan could have moved to any one of the surrounding towns outside of Riverview’s location of Red Bank, N.J., but he consciously decided to become a resident of Red Bank and live in the community in which he worked.

In a single decade, Hogan transformed Riverview Medical Center, part of Meridian Health, from an already outstanding facility, to a nationally-recognized award-winning medical center. Under his leadership, Riverview has continually adapted to meet the growing needs of the community through innovation, leading-edge technology, and truly exceptional patient care.

Within the first six months at Riverview, Hogan led a $63 million dollar renovation project called “The New View of Riverview.” The project became the largest and most comprehensive in the Medical Center’s 73-year history, enhancing both its quality of care and its patient care environment, as well as adding a variety of advanced medical technologies. Completed in 2004, it boasted the new Riverview Rehabilitation Center, with 30 patient beds, expansive therapy gym, and inviting open-air atrium; the Booker Radiation Oncology Center, offering state-of-the-art cancer treatment technology such as intensity modulated radiation therapy and a CT Simulator; a new Intensive Care Unit; and a new Medical Day Stay Unit to conduct a variety of high-tech outpatient procedures.

Perhaps the largest and most complex phase of the project was the K. Hovnanian Pavilion, including the outstanding Alton A. Hovnanian Emergency Care Center and Critical Care Center. This new facility vastly improved each patient’s emergency room experience by providing more space, new emergency-certified physicians, physician assistants, and new technology. The “New View” was the springboard to future successes for Riverview, and was the catalyst for attracting new technologies and the most talented physicians around to the region.

“Tim is a president that leads by example,” says Tony Cava, executive director at Bayshore Community Hospital and former vice president of strategic planning and business development for Riverview Medical Center. “He sets the tone at Riverview, whether that means stopping to personally remove a scuff from the floor, or taking the lead on weekend Executive Rounding. Tim is not only respected by those who report to him, but serves as an ambassador to those people HE reports to: our patients."

In 2005 under Hogan’s leadership, Riverview Medical Center became home to one of the industry’s most revolutionary radiosurgical technologies: the CyberKnife® Robotic Radiosurgery System. It offers a non-invasive alternative to surgery for the treatment of both cancerous and non-cancerous tumors. In its continuing mission to bring ground-breaking, preventative, and life-saving treatment to patients, Riverview, part of Meridian Cancer Care, was among the first to bring the CyberKnife to the New York-New Jersey region. To date, over 1100 patients have been treated using the CyberKnife at Riverview, and more than 4000 treatments have been performed using this technology.

On the eve of his 10-year anniversary as president, Hogan launched one of Riverview’s most dramatic projects in the Medical Center’s history, the creation of a nearly 22,000 square foot center for surgical excellence to be constructed in the Blaisdell Pavilion, on the Medical Center campus. This project will include: two sophisticated specialty surgical suites, a renovated post-anesthesia care area, relocated and renovated Same-Day Surgery Suite, and a state-of-the-art conference and educational center. Construction is underway, with the center opening in the second half of 2012.

During Hogan’s tenure, Riverview Medical Center also furthered its mission of providing patients with the highest quality care and a truly outstanding patient experience. Hogan served as the catalyst to ensure that patient satisfaction scores, as well as quality scores, increased year over year at the Medical Center. As a result of this dedication to patient satisfaction, Riverview was honored with its first J.D. Power and Associates recognition for providing an “Outstanding Patient Experience” in 2005. Once again for 2011, Riverview was honored with a J.D. Power and Associates recognition for Outpatient Services. Riverview is now a seven-time recipient of the J.D. Power and Associates Distinguished Hospital Award and achieving this distinction is a testimony to the compassion and care provided at Riverview Medical Center under the leadership of Hogan.

Just as Hogan briefly pauses to acknowledge and celebrate this 10-year milestone, another leadership opportunity in his career is already underway. In September 2010, Bayshore Community Hospital joined the Meridian Health family becoming the sixth hospital in the Monmouth and Ocean counties system. Hogan was instrumental in spearheading the merger implementation between the two hospitals. Hogan and the rest of his leadership team will bring a similar vision to Bayshore and advance the development of patient care and services in a manner that is consistent with the Meridian way.

Working in collaboration with Bayshore physicians, nurses, managers, and team members, Hogan is incorporating his knowledge and leadership philosophy from Riverview, and adopting best practices and expanding programs where necessary. Under his guidance, Bayshore Community Hospital will continue to emerge as a premier medical facility that continues to raise the bar in the delivery of health care excellence in Monmouth County.

Hogan is a Fellow of the American College of Health Care Executives. Hogan has also served as a member of numerous health care and civic boards, including: Chairman of the Community Red Bank YMCA ( 2006 – 2010), Chairman, 2011 Kaboom Festival, Board Member, Parker Family Health Center of Red Bank, Board Member, Red Bank RiverCenter, and Board Member, Eastern Monmouth County Chamber of Commerce.
