Cake trays evolved from serving trays. "Salvers", as they were called, were footed trays used to serve beverages. Designs became more elegant as time passed, and they were elevated via pedestal to better showcase the food. Most early cake stands were imported. More were made in the United States as manufacturing increased here in the States. They can be made from a variety of materials, including silver, glass and crystal. Most vintage glass cake stands are made from pressed glass.
They were made to elevate a dessert so that everyone could see it. Today, cake plates can be used to display any dessert, including cupcakes and cookies. Not only are they very collectible and make a very nice gift (Mother’s Day, wedding gift, housewarming present), they are also handy to have when you are entertaining a group. Think of them as an all purpose display tray. You can use them stacked to serve appetizers, as a plate for the cheese course, or stacked as a centerpiece. That way, people actually see your beautifully collected plates. They are great to use if you want to impress your guests with a beautiful tablescape.
