Monmouth Symphony Orchestra’s 2013 Goldwasser Young Artist Concerto
Competition, will perform Sir Edward Elgar’s Concerto in E minor, Op. 85, with the
orchestra. Led by the orchestra’s principal conductor, Roy Gussman, the orchestra will also perform Wagner’s Overture to Die Meistersinger and Schubert’s Symphony No. 8, "Unfinished".
Miss Lee, an 11th grader at Ramapo High School, has studied cello for more than 10
years, currently with Richard Aaron at the Juilliard School, and performs in both a trio and a quartet at the Juilliard Pre-College program. Her expressive, musical playing and polished technique won the judges’ votes in the 2013 Goldwasser Young Artist Competition. One of the standard works for cello, Elgar’s Concerto was his final major work. Written shortly after World War I, this sensitive, introspective music is a personal elegy by an aging Victorian to the great devastation of a conflict that decimated an entire generation of European youth.
The concert will open with the overture to Richard Wagner’s light-hearted opera Die Meistersinger von Nuremburg. Alternating between fully-scored passages employing the entire orchestra, and delicate contrapuntal writing, the overture has been an audience favorite since its premiere.
Rounding out the program will be Franz Schubert’s Symphony No. 8 in B minor. Known as the “Unfinished” Symphony because it has only two movements instead of the usual four, it contains beautiful and memorable melodies nonetheless.
Prior to the performance, Monmouth Symphony Orchestra host Tom Avakian will interview soloist Sydney Lee in the theatre at 2:15 p.m.
