2 Of 10 'Safest Cities' In New Jersey Are In Bergen County: Study

See which two Bergen County towns are now considered among the safest in New Jersey in a new study.

BERGEN COUNTY, NJ — The safety and security research group Safewise has released rankings for the safest communities in each state, and two Bergen County towns come out on top.

Safewise says the rankings "are intended to highlight cities with low per capita crime and ignite conversation and action around how to make all cities and communities safer."

For the third year in a row, they said that Vernon Township, in Sussex County, is the safest community in the Garden State.

New Jersey fared well in terms of overall violent crime, coming in at 2.46 incidents per 1,000 people, the seventh lowest in the country and lower than the national average of 4.43.

The safest communities, according to Safewise, are:

  • Bernards Township
  • South River
  • Barnegat Township
  • Dumont
  • New Providence
  • Hopatcong
  • Oakland
  • Madison
  • Denville Township

They said that Dumont's already low violent crime rate dropped to 0.2. Oakland, new on the list, has a rate of 0.3.
