UPDATE: 2 Children Struck By Vehicles Minutes Apart In Glen Rock; Man Struck Hours Later

The kids were not using crosswalks, police said. They suffered nonlife-threatening injuries, police said.

GLEN ROCK, NJ — Two borough kids were struck by vehicles minutes apart from each other at two different locations Thursday afternoon, police said. In a separate incident, a man who just came off a NJ Transit bus was struck.

Police responded at 3:26 p.m. to a 13-year-old who was struck on Hamilton Avenue near Rock Road, said Chief Dean Ackermann. The boy was struck by a 42-year-old Glen Rock woman.

The boy and the woman said he crossed the street about 150 feet from a nearby crosswalk and was hit by the vehicle "when he stepped out from behind another vehicle, which was stopped in traffic," Ackermann said.

Police found the girl stepped out into traffic about 75 feet south of the crosswalk at Thurston and Harristown Road, the chief said. A 71-year-old man was driving the car that hit the girl.

Both children were taken to Valley Hospital in Ridgewood, Ackermann said.

In related news, a 42-year-old Glen Rock man was struck by a vehicle at 7:23 p.m. at Rock Road and Ackerman Avenue, Ackermann said.

The man had just gotten off a NJ Transit bus on Ackerman Avenue and began crossing Rock Road when a vehicle made a left turn from Ackerman Avenue onto Rock Road and hit the man, police said. He suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to Hackensack University Medical Center.

The driver, a 73-year-old Wayne man, did not see the pedestrian as he entered the crosswalk. No summonses were issued.

Ackerman said that low light and the dark clothes the pedestrian wore "are believed to have been a contributing factor," in the crash. No witnesses have been identified, the chief said.
