Where are RHS Grads Headed?

The graduating seniors' plans for the fall

On Thursday, 417 of the current 420 Ridgewood High School seniors will proceed out of the turret, down the walkway, and onto the field to receive their diplomas in the graduation ceremony.

Many seniors have a clear idea of where they’re going, according to data from the senior survey distributed by the guidance department (note: 412 out of 420 students completed the survey).

This fall, 90.8 percent (that’s 377 students) will attend a four-year university, and 4.6 percent (or 19 students) will go to a two-year college. One student will go to trade school, three to the armed forces, and five will take a gap year.

Up from last year, 81.6 percent (329 students) will go to a school out of state. Only 18.4 percent (74 students) will remain in New Jersey, with Bergen Community College receiving the most grads (17 students).

Out of state, New York University is receiving the most RHS grads (16 students).

Some were disappointed to see that only 9 students are going to Ivy League schools this year, when it was 16 last year.

At Brown University, 3 of the 19 that applied to were accepted and will attend; at Columbia University, 3 of the 29 that applied were accepted and will attend; at Cornell University 7 of the 38 that applied were accepted and 4 will attend.

Dartmouth, Harvard, Princeton, UPenn, and Yale did not accept any RHS students despite there being no fewer than 10 applicants per school.

For the complete list of where students applied and were accepted, see the attached pdf.

At their schools, 32.2 percent (124 students) will receive scholarships, 84.2 percent (101 students) of which are for academic ability, 23.3 percent (28 students) for community service, 15 percent (18 students) for athletic ability, and 8.3 percent (10 students) for artistic talent.
