ENGLEWOOD, NJ — When the Englewood police posted on social media Tuesday about a gray French bulldog they'd found, the photo received a lot of interest — but not necessarily related to the dog.
"What dog?" asked one woman, in the comments.
"Is the officer looking for a home too?" asked another.
"Can I take both pls," asked a third.
"Do they both enjoy belly rubs?" asked another wag.
The Englewood Police had posted the photo with a message asking, "Do you know where I live? PO Lagrosa will be riding doubles in the patrol car today with our newest addition to the 'EPD temporary K-9 Unit.' This adorable pup was found near West Palisade Avenue and Humphrey Street."
"At the corner of Thirst and Trap," someone suggested.
"Englewood ...u knew what u were doing," wrote a woman, to which the department replied, "Helping a lost pup get home safe is one of the most rewarding parts of the job!"
So Patch did its duty, of course, to find out if he was spoken for — the dog, that is.
Common Strategy
Police departments around the country have drawn eyes to their posts about lost pets with humorous social media posts in recent years, but Englewood played it straight this time. Still, they received dozens of comments on their post on Tuesday.
Police Chief Thomas Greeley said he was happy with the outcome, noting that a similar response occurred when they showed a photo of a dog with relatively new Officer Kevin Silva.
"Officer Jesse Lagrosa was sworn in last year (along with Police Officer Kevin Silva, who also received a bit of attention for a similar post a little while back)," Greeley told Patch. "Most importantly, I’m happy to report that the dog was returned to its owner."
He added, "We definitely get a kick out of the comments as well; hopefully you can see that in some of our responses. It’s important to laugh especially in our line of work. And while we appreciate the community's sudden enthusiasm for our department's recruiting, our priority remains serving the residents of our city."
But what about Lagrosa, and commenters' questions about whether he's single?
"I’ll hold off on reporting anything about Jesse’s status, other than to say he’s doing a great job and fitting well in our city and our department," Greeley said.
Lagrosa just finished his training at the Police Academy last year.
"We certainly appreciate everyone’s help in getting the word out to help reunite a family with their pet," the chief noted.
Greeley didn't respond to further questions about the dog or officer — such as whether the pooch is from Englewood, whether it's true that Lagrosa is related to a former Hillsdale police chief, and if those guns are registered.
