NORTH JERSEY — A family bakery in Carlstadt called it quits last week, but another set of bakeries is expanding into new areas.

Veriella's Bakery in Carlstadt closed for good on Wednesday after 14 years in business.

"After 14 wonderful years, we have made the incredibly difficult decision to close," they said in a message. "Veriella's Bakery may be closing its doors, but the friendships and memories we've made will stay with us forever."

They didn't state the reason for the closing.

Also last week, a bakery that started in Morristown opened its doors in Hoboken, and has also expanded to New York City.

Dan Bakery and Café serves up coffee, raspberry and chocolate croissants, muffins, cinnamon rolls, ham and spinach croissants, and much more at their spacious new spot at 500 Washington St.

The spot was recently home to an ice cream spot that closed because other ice cream shops came to the area, the prior owner said. Before that, it was the longtime Hoboken Daily News magazine shop.

"Our most popular cake is the honey cake," said co-owner Aijan Oztemir on Tuesday, when Patch stopped in. "We have the freshest baked goods that you can find. They're baked every day."

The original Dan was founded last fall by Anar and Arman Kozhabayev, who are friends of the owner. They also opened a New York location last month.
