Another Classic North Jersey Diner Closes Suddenly
Three Jersey diners have announced their closures in the last year and one is being resurrected.
NORTH JERSEY — As diners struggle to compete with on-line food delivery services, several have closed in North Jersey over the past six months, and and now another has been added to the list.
The Coach House Diner — a 24-hour eatery on Route 4 in Hackensack — closed suddenly last week, leaving a note on the door for staff and customers, reports said.
It was purchased by a chain called El Carwash, which will redevelop the site, reported NJ.com on Friday.

New Jersey is known for its classic diners because of the state's location between New York City and Philadelphia. Historically, it was a popular place to build and ship prefab diners.
The sudden closure of the Coach House came on the heels of three others in the last six months:
- The Americana Diner, on Main Street in West Orange, served its final meal in March. It was among the few 24-hour diners left in the state, Patch reported.
- Also in March, the Gotham City Diner in Ridgefield said it would close, but its sister diner in Fair Lawn remained open.
- Last November, the iconic Miss America Diner on Jersey City's west side announced it would close. A local Italian deli, Salumeria Ercolano on West Side Avenue, moved into the space. The diner owners promised, "No condos coming, just great food!"
Diner In Bergen County Will Return
But the Bendix Diner in Hasbrouck Heights is on track to reopen some time this year, the new owner said.
Restaurateur Peter Meskouris is moving forward with plans to rehab and reopen the diner, located at the crux of two busy Bergen County highways. The Bendix opened in 1947.
