Brush Fires Damage Several Glen Rock Properties: Police

An 'equipment malfunction' on the tracks while a train was heading north appeared to have started the fires, police said.

GLEN ROCK, NJ — Several brush fires ignited along the NJ Transit Main Line causing damage Saturday, police said.

Police responded to the scene just before 4 p.m. and found "numerous" brush fires, Sgt. Frank Riggio.

The fires spanned from Main Street south of Rock Road to just before the Ridgewood border along the tracks, Riggio said.

A train headed north had just passed along the tracks with what appeared to be an equipment malfunction that caused sparks that ignited the fires, Riggio said.

Glen Rock firefighters, with help from firefighters from Ridgewood, Fair Lawn, Paramus, Wyckoff, Hawthorne, Midland Park, extinguished the fires, the sergeant said.

The New Jersey Transit Police Department is investigating the incident and trying to determine what train was traveling along the tracks when the fires started, police said.
