Company Controller Gave Himself Raises, Misappropriated Funds: Bergen County Prosecutor
A North Haledon man misappropriated funds from a Bergen County company in several different ways, prosecutors said.
BERGEN COUNTY, NJ — A comptroller of a Bergen County company misappropriated $878,000 by giving himself raises and taking other unauthorized actions, prosecutors said.
Steven C. Bergen, 65, of North Haledon was arrested Monday for theft by deception, prosecutors said.

In November of 2024, the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Financial Crimes Unit received information about an alleged theft of funds by a former controller of a
Bergen County corporation, prosecutors said.

They determined that Berger "engaged in a sustained course of conduct to misappropriate company funds," prosecutors said.
He gave himself unauthorized salary increases and bonuses, prosecutors said.

He also used a company-issued credit card for personal purchases, prosecutors said, and diverted company funds to pay for his own credit card balances.
He was charged with two counts of second-degree theft by
deception and taken to the Bergen County Jail to await a
first appearance in Bergen County Superior Court in Hackensack, prosecutors said.
