Driver Charged In Hit-And-Run That Killed Pedestrian In Bergen County Friday

HACKENSACK, NJ — A 38-year-old Bergenfield resident was charged in a hit-and-run that killed a man in Hackensack on Friday, officials said.

Terrence J. Hedden was arrested hours after he struck a man on Friday morning, said the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office.

The victim, a 74-year-old man, was taken to the hospital and pronounced dead shortly after being struck.

Prosecutors said that on Friday, around 1:49 a.m., police responded to the corner of Essex Street and Summit Avenue and found a man with serious injuries. He was taken to Hackensack University Medical Center.

The victim's name was still being withheld on Monday to await additional notifications to next of kin, prosecutors said.

Investigators determined that Hedden was driving a 2021 Honda Pilot west on Essex Street when he struck the man, who was trying to cross Summit Avenue.

Hedden was charged with second-degree knowingly leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death, third-degree endangering an injured victim, and other motor vehicle offenses, prosecutors said Monday.

Hedden was taken to the Bergen County Jail to await his first appearance in Bergen County Superior Court in Hackensack, prosecutors said.
