DWI, Shoplifting and Burglary: Glen Rock Police Blotter

01-18-2021
12:54 p.m. – Multiple officers were dispatched to a report from a concerned citizen who observed what appeared to be a male subject forcing a small child into a vehicle near the Glen Rock High School and then driving off. Officers were subsequently able to identify the vehicle involved. Investigation found that what appeared to be a small child was actually a dog which had become trapped in the gap between the seats in the vehicle. The man operating the vehicle was in fact struggling to free the dog.

01-19-2021
3:50 p.m. – Officers were dispatched to Route 208 South near Lincoln Avenue due to a disabled vehicle obstructing traffic. While attempting to assist the vehicle and reopen the traffic lane, officers observed a white Jeep traveling on the shoulder of the road passing stopped traffic. When the vehicle approached the officers, who were on foot along the highway, the operator abruptly attempted to reenter the traffic lane.

Officers, whose vehicles were blocking traffic to protect the scene, were able to stop the subject vehicle and confront the operator. During the course of the stop, Sgt. Greg Carter determined that the driver, a 52-year-old Hawthorne man, was intoxicated. The driver was placed under arrest and transported to Police HQ. His vehicle was impounded and towed from the highway.
At headquarters the driver was processed and released to the custody of a sober family member, in accordance with John’s Law. He was charged with DWI and issued additional traffic summonses for careless driving and improper passing.
01-20-2021
5:04 p.m. – Officers responded to a reported residential burglary which occurred on the 500 block of Maple Avenue near Central School. A preliminary investigation determined that actor(s) entered the home through an unlocked rear door sometime between 2 PM and 5PM. Second floor bedrooms were found to be ransacked and the resident reported items of jewelry and other property, valued at approximately $ 2,900, to have been taken.
The scene was processed by the Bergen County Sheriff’s Department BCI Crime Scene Unit. A canvass of the area was conducted, and Glen Rock Detectives are actively investigating.

9:45 a.m. – The manager of Bottle King on Prospect Street reported the shoplifting of three bottles of Patron, valued at $126.27, which had occurred in the past. As related by the manager, a store employee reported an individual had been in the store on January 20th around 8:25 PM acting suspiciously. Based upon the information provided, a review of video footage was conducted by management and it was confirmed that a shoplifting had occurred.
The suspect was observed to be a male dressed in blue jeans, a dark hoodie type sweatshirt, white sneakers, wearing a blue face mask. After taking the bottles of Patron he left the store on foot, crossing Prospect Street and walking south into Fair Lawn. Anyone who may have witnessed this shoplifting is asked to contact D/Sgt. Jim Calaski at (201) 670-3948 or jcalaski@glenrockpolice.com. Detectives are currently reviewing the video footage in an attempt to identify the actor.

9:45 a.m. – A Glen Rock resident reported signing into their Amazon account and receiving a pop-up message advising of fraudulent activity on their account. When the complainant called the phone number provided, they were informed of several suspicious purchases which were allegedly shipped to an address in Ohio. The purported customer service representative directed the complainant to a site called “AnyDesk.com” where they could remotely access the complainant’s Amazon account. There was also a reference made to a “pre-authorized foreign transaction” and the use of pre-paid gift cards. It was at this point that the complainant suspected that this was a scam and hung up. All credit cards associated with the complainant’s Amazon account have since been canceled. As of this juncture no financial loss had been detected.
